A few years ago I decided to go natural with my hair because I was curious about my own God-given hair and oh boy.. I’m so happy I made that decision. This allowed me to learn more about my hair and it certainly shows. At the beginning there were not a lot of people who liked my hair and I would hear rude & ignorant comments all the time. Some of which I still here to this day. Here are a few that I still can’t stand to hear after all these years and I know that a lot of natural girls will agree with.
1. Touching our hair without our permission
I know you’re curious about my hair and want to explore what it’s all about. You can get all the information you want but please don’t touch my hair unless I give you permission to do so. This is not a petting zoo..
2. You’re hair is so curly you must be mixed!
So what you’re implying is that it’s impossible for a black woman to have beautiful curly hair? .. I’m am not mixed. I’m an angolan black woman, my parents are black people with naturally coily hair. So please have several seats..
3. What do you put in your hair to make it curly?
Water. Refer back to n°2 if you’re not satisfied with this answer.
4. Did you cut your hair? Your hair looked so long a few days ago!
No, my hair actually reverts back to it’s natural state whenever it gets wet which is normal. We call that shrinkage.
5. Where can I buy it?
Nowhere this hair is mine, it’s unique and it can’t be bought. Refer back to n°2 & n°3.
6. Can I touch it?
Yes, I know I’ve said this before but this is very important. So please, keep your grimy hands away from my fro!
